Merging application definitions is a means of transferring the definitions contained inside one or more applications into one application. To demonstrate this process, we are choosing to merge two applications that share a very similar name. One application named "Notepad++" will be merged into "Notepad ++", a separate application that we know is used by the same users for the same purposes, but has been mistakenly named with an extra space. Once these two applications are merged, the single application will contain all file rules and hashes of each original application definition prior to their merger. There is logic built-in to prevent duplicate rules from being created.
Note that there is also a ThreatLocker Built-In definition for Notepad++ in the screenshot below. Built-In definitions cannot be merged into your custom applications as they are managed by ThreatLocker.
Having multiple applications with the same or similar names can make it more difficult to identify what applications are permitted in your environment. Merging applications where applicable can improve the simplicity and efficiency of your environment, so it is important to perform this type of maintenance regularly.
How to Merge
First, select the checkbox next to the application(s) that you want to merge into one application. In this example, we will be merging the two custom applications for Notepad++ together.
As shown in the screenshot above, the application that you want to merge into one application is selected. In this case, the topmost "Notepad ++" application was selected to merge into the "Notepad++" application below it. (1)
Next, click "Merge Applications" to open a new pop-up menu. (2)
Once this new pop-up menu is open, begin typing the name of the application you want to merge into. Once you have entered some text, a dropdown of available applications will appear as shown in the screenshot below.
As mentioned before, the "Notepad++" application will be selected since we would like all of our definitions relating to the Notepad++ application to be in one place.
Once you have clicked on the application you want to merge into, in this case "Notepad++", select "Merge" to finalize the process and combine your application definitions together.
The two applications will now have been successfully merged into one application definition. Now, as shown in the screenshot below, there is only one Notepad++ custom application and the Built-In Notepad++ application.
